They discovered a heavy concrete brick, which had obviously been heaved at the window to shatter it. They left the brick where it had landed for the police to see. Within minutes a patrol car had arrived and two uniformed officers surveyed the damage. " the dark-haired officer asked Riley. "No, we were upstairs and heard the crash," Riley explained. " the older of the two officers asked. "Nasty piece of work," the other observed as he looked at the tortured stuffed animal. "We spent the day asking some people questions about a hospital fire that happened in Galveston eight months ago," Riley said.

Caralie opened her purse and withdrew what Riley recognized as the notes they'd discovered among Loretta's belongings the night before. As Caralie explained to the sergeant about being out of the country and only just discovering about the fire and her sister's death in the last couple of days, Riley watched the play of emotions on her face. She had one of the most expressive faces he'd ever seen and in a flash she radiated her initial disbelief, her anger and finally her grief. " She shifted positions once again, averting her gaze from his. "And he isn't officially my fiance. I mean, he's asked me to marry him, but I haven't accepted his proposal yet. " She raised her chin defiantly. " She didn't sound like a woman in love, nor did her eyes have the starry-eyed gleam of a woman eager to rush into the vows of matrimony.
