She held the puppy protectively in her arms, walked by the scowling bus driver, and exited the bus. When she arrived at her office with the tired and hungry puppy, she asked her secretary what they should feed him. The secretary rushed to the store and bought some hamburger meat. But when they tried to feed it to him, the puppy didn’t take a bite. He soon fell asleep under Maris’s desk.

Two days later, on May 11, Byrd asked Igloo if he wanted to fly. Igloo hopped into the Fokker airplane without a second thought. The engines roared to life, and the plane raced down the runway, taking off like a bird into the air. Soon after, Amundsen’s dirigible lifted into the sunny sky and followed. Igloo, Byrd, and Bennett were leading the way on the first leg of Amundsen’s journey to the North Pole. Igloo coolly patrolled the cabin while Bennett and Byrd piloted and navigated the plane. Three days later, Amundsen landed his dirigible in Point Barrow, Alaska, after also successfully flying over the North Pole.

It took a nail-biting six hours to load the sixty-three-foot red wing from the body of the Josephine Ford safely on board. The clanking sound of chains and the rumble of the gears shifting were loud as a crane hoisted the wing up into the air. It hovered over the opened hatch, where the men stood on ladders as they carefully eased it into the hold below deck. But it was too big to fit, and it became stuck. Everyone was quiet for a brief moment, as if time stood still. The men grabbed some axes and began chopping away the bulkhead that was in the way.
